The Merghem industrial city lies in western Alexandria, in El Amreya; it was first set aside to move foundry workshops out of the residential areas. The project stalled from 2008, because the workshops built did not meet the foundry industry’s requirements.
The Merghem 1 plastics complex opened in 2018 on 25 feddans with 240 workshops, and Merghem 3 is being built as an extension of Merghem 1 and 2.
